What Men’s Shoes Say About Their Personalities

Whether you’re on a first date or a job interview, the first time you meet other people can be a nerve-wracking experience. Will they like you? Will you get be able to make the sale? Will you be able to convince them to give you a job? Having great social skills and understanding body language helps answer these questions, but have you ever thought to look at a man’s shoes? Believe it or not, men's shoes can say a lot about who they are.

Dress Shoes

If a man is wearing dress shoes, he most likely has a strong sense of self. He probably likes suits. He doesn’t want to be seen as a little boy; rather, he wants to come across as a competent adult who has carefully crafted a look. He might be worried about what others think of him — but he’ll look good doing it.

Boots

This man isn’t afraid of getting messy. He might work with his hands in a job like construction, plumbing, or welding, where strong, sturdy footwear is a necessity for keeping his feet safe. If he’s got old, worn boots, you know he’s kept up with them for a long time: Loyalty is his strong suit. He’s independent, adventurous, unassuming, and probably outdoorsy.

Slip-ons

Slip-on shoe styles, if they’re old and dirty, may make you think of house shoes or slippers. It’s difficult to look distinguished in slip-ons unless they’re some kind of loafer, they’re leather, and they look new. Loafers with slim-fit pants and a tailored jacket is a great look on a man, but if he’s rolled up his pants to showcase his slip-ons, he’s bordering on hipster territory (though some men can pull off this look). You’ll know that he’s put some effort into his appearance when you see how he’s coordinated this type of shoe with the rest of his outfit. He’s usually in a hurry — why waste time tying shoes? — but he’s engaged, curious, and always ready for an adventure.

Sandals

Sandals give a man a laid-back vibe, and this could be good or bad, depending on the situation. If he comes in for a job interview wearing a t-shirt and sandals, this is probably not who you want to hire. This guy might have trouble taking things seriously, but he’s probably the first person you think of when you want to have fun. He probably likes to hang with his (guy) friends on the weekends, drinking beer, shooting pool, or playing video games.

Sneakers

Most people wear sneakers from time to time, so if you see a man wearing sneakers, you might not immediately know what to think of him or his attitude. This is normal. He could be coming from the gym, biking to the grocery store, or just walking outside on a sunny day. It’s also possible that he’s a relaxed person with a need for comfortable shoes. Bottom line: Sneaker guys are good ones.
